Life Settlement Market Scan
For policyholders 65+ considering selling their life insurance policy. Estimate the secondary-market offer range, the broker fee, the net to you, and whether settling actually beats just surrendering the policy.

What the market would pay

Estimate only. Real offers depend on medical underwriting — the buyer orders independent life-expectancy reports. Always shop the policy to 3+ buyers before signing. Surrendering is reversible up to closing; the settlement is not.
When this makes sense — and when it doesn't
When it makes sense
- You're 70+ and the policy is no longer needed (kids grown, mortgage paid, estate covered).
- Premium burden is starting to bite — you'd otherwise let it lapse for nothing.
- You have a documented medical impairment that shortens life expectancy — settlement offers rise sharply.
- The face amount is at least $250K — below that, institutional buyers won't bid.
When it doesn't
- You're 65 and healthy — offers are typically only 10–18% of face. Surrender or 1035-exchange may serve better.
- The cash surrender value is already 80%+ of what a settlement would net. Just surrender it.
- Your beneficiaries still need the death benefit. A settlement extinguishes that.
- You haven't shopped — never accept the first offer. Spread to 3+ buyers.
How life settlements price. Institutional buyers (life settlement funds) estimate the insured's life expectancy via medical underwriting, then PV the future death benefit against future premium obligations and an internal cost-of-capital — typically 14–18%. The wider the spread between LE and policy maturity, the higher the offer. Terminal LE (under 24 months) crosses into "viatical" territory and routinely pays 50–80% of face.
